Arizona Sunrise

What I love about the twilight early dawn and dusk hours is the slow color grades from deep blood orange to yellow, green and then dipping navy, grey and into black. Photo taken at the Arizona Biltmore Hotel in Phoenix. Yes, that's a star or a planet there. Venus?

Dragon Frog

I mixed and designed sound on this animated promotional trailer. The amazing animation is from Bunko Studios. Then the project returned to Hothead where my mix became a sound explosion! I even wrote an little Taiko Drum and French Horn theme song for Wally at the end.

I loved working with Sergio and Nanci and their adorable French Bulldog, Fat Boy. We had a great time. I really want to thank them for giving me such creative freedom to have fun with the sound and to channel Wally and find the music inside him.

Look out for Wally and Dragon Frog coming soon!

Dino Dan

This show has become a big hit on Nick Junior. Must be the excitement the kids feel when I mix in all that low end rumble to really help get the feeling of a giant dinosaur in the room. A little rumble goes a long way. I mixed a ton of promos for Dino Dan but this character spot is one of my favorites.

The Snow Man

I must confess, that this blog, at least the title, is highly inspired by the poetry of Wallace Stevens and especially his poem, "The Snow Man." His birthday is today, October 2nd. In tribute to him and all the hours and hours of reflection and insight he has given me, I share one of his greatest poems:

The Snow Man

One must have a mind of winter
To regard the frost and the boughs
Of the pine-trees crusted with snow;

And have been cold a long time
To behold the junipers shagged with ice,
The spruces rough in the distant glitter

Of the January sun; and not to think
Of any misery in the sound of the wind,
In the sound of a few leaves,

Which is the sound of the land
Full of the same wind
That is blowing in the same bare place

For the listener, who listens in the snow,
And, nothing himself, beholds
Nothing that is not there and the nothing that is.

Diego International Rescue League

This could quite possibly be the most sound effects intensive spot I have done for Nick Junior. In the past, we often kept the mixes a little more laid back and low key. But this being the International Rescue League and Diego being a boy of action, the powers that be opted for a little bit more intensity. Add to that some crazy delay and backwards reverb effects on the voice-over (techniques that I would normally employ on MTV or in a horror flick) and you get a whopper of a spot.

Here's a the VO by itself so you can hear it clean.

Red Dead Redemption Music

Cool soundtrack on this game. I love the way they used code to make the music change depending on the action on screen.

Believe Emmy Nomination!

A film I mixed last year was nominated for an Emmy for Outstanding Nonfiction Special. I don't think they give that to the Sound Designer though. Do they have a Best Sound Design in an Oustanding Nonfiction Special category?

Dora Documentary

In the tradition of the SFX of the Day campaign, I boosted the sound effects in this little section of a 11 minute documentary on Dora the Explorer I mixed last week. She is celebrating her 10th anniversary this year.

This is a song I wrote about 5 years ago for my friends' wedding. I have been recently revisiting some older material and re-mixing and adding new arrangements. This song was ripe for a revisit.

SFX OF THE DAY

As part of the SFX Of The Day campaign, I give you the SFX heavy mix of "I Love Letters." It just seemed wrong to post any of these FX without the picture and then because it's a song, it seemed wrong not to have a little music in there too. Without further ado . . .

SFX OF THE DAY

Chairman Nick SFX Close

Much of the SFX I put in spots get a little lost in the music or under the dialogue. I decided today to start a new "SFX of the day" series. I want to let those SFX shine. This time, you won't just feel them, you will hear them. They will rock your core.

The SFX of the day challenge today is to name 7 of the 10 SFX used in this design. The winner will get a lifetime supply of encouraging remarks. Post your reply in the comments section.

You're Cut Off

I have been working on an ongoing promo campaign for a new VH1 reality show called You're Cut Off about a bunch of brats that get cut off from their sugar daddies (whether it's their real daddy or husband) and made to live together and fight and do chores. I like Erica here mowing the lawn in her heels -- "Yeah."

Butterfinger MTV

The producer brought this project to me with absolutely no sound. We put in a little drop music at the top, then I added in some FX, some bowed bass, some electric bass, a little dialogue, and the back-end groove c/o Stylus RMX. Not bad for about 2 hours work.

Earth Day on Nick Jr.

I was asked to do a sound-alike for a series of Earth Day spots on Nick Junior. The original tune titled "Battle Without Honor or Humanity," written by Tomayasu Hotei, was featured in Quentin Tarantino's Kill Bill vol. 1. The producer from Nick Jr., Jennifer Treuting, asked me to write this piece when the stock sound-alikes came up short.

High Def Audio and Mark Waldrep

I listened to a podcast called "Home Theater Geeks" earlier today and really loved hearing the guest Mark Waldrep discuss digital recording and true "High Def Audio." It's good to hear that someone else is able to articulate and has explored what I have felt for a long time.

I don't understand why people are so fascinated with vinyl, tape and other crappy antiquated recording formats. There is absolutely no way you cannot digitally reproduce exactly what a tube does, what a capacitor does, what tape does, or any other component for that matter. You need a good mic and a good D/A, good speakers and that's it.
